Cast Glass
Kiln-casting or slumping is one of the oldest techniques for shaping glass with heat. It offers a wide range of visual effects. A sheet of glass is heated in a kiln until it softens and "slumps" into or over a three-dimensional mold. On the mold side, the glass conforms perfectly to the shape and can take on a variety of interesting textures. The other side remains smooth, even if it is not completely flat.
Slumped glass retains the light-transmitting properties of the original glass, but causes varying degrees of diffusion and distortion depending on the pattern.
Glass & Mirror Craft offers more than a dozen standard patterns for cast or slumped glass. We can also work with you to develop a custom pattern suited to your specific needs.
All are available in clear float glass, low-iron float glass and grey or bronze glass. Slumped-glass panels can also be tempered and/or laminated for additional strength and safety.
