Glass looks very smooth. But if you look at a smooth glass surface under a microscope, you’ll see a rough surface of peaks and valleys. While invisible to the naked eye, these peaks and valleys trap everything including minerals from your water and soap scum to skin oils and bacteria.

These surface irregularities increase as the glass actually corrodes through age and exposure to heat, light and chemicals. Even common household cleaners accelerate the corrosion process — which means the more you clean a piece of glass, the harder it will be to keep clean.
